My arrangement for small orchestra of this overture by Auber. Johann Strauss II did the same for his debut concert in 1844. It was politely received but everyone was waiting for the waltz. The original was written for an enormous orchestra. The version here probably sounds better than Strauss’s as at least I have full string sections.

The opera was first performed in 1828. Although rarely performed today it was very influential and popular in its day. It was instrumental in triggering the Belgian revolution of 1830 and after the French revolution in the same year was immediately revived in Paris
