August Lanner (1835-55)

august_lanner.jpg

August Lanner was the son of the celebrated Joseph Lanner who died when August was a child. August led his own orchestra from 1853 until his early death at the age of 20 in 1855.

In that period he published over thirty dances of astonishing maturity, most of which are on this page. The style is original, owing nothing to his father or contemporaries. Given the quality of these works he would surely have given Johann Strauss II a run for his money, had he lived. These pieces are the equal of any being written by his contemporaries, in my opinion.
